Establishing domestic spaces in buildings originally constructed for industrial use - the loft phenomenon - has become one of the most significant cultural movements of the late twentieth century. Marcus Field, former editor of Blueprint, is the Culture Editor at The Independent on Sunday newspaper. Mark Irving is a freelance architecture, design and art commentator; who regularly writes for publications including The Independent, The Daily Telegraph and Arena.
