Sinopsis
This examination of nursing expertise and advanced practice considers the impact on nurses of the reduction in junior doctors' hours, identifies definitional problems, and describes the emergence of four distinct types of expertise. The influence of nurses' "world views" on knowledge use and development is recognized, and the doctor-nurse relationship is seen as particularly influential. Expert nursing knowledge is examined, and the cultural influences on it are considered. Aimed at nurses, managers, doctors and educationalists, this text aims to encourage readers to recognize that expertise development requires much more than simple importation of knowledge - it also requires empowerment of nurses and the whole milieu in which they work.
