Sinopsis
Moves towards democracy in Eastern Europe and the "new world order" debates have launched the EC into a new stage in its evolution, and are testing the strength of the Community on the eve of the Single European Market. Arguments within the EC, on issues of national sovereignty, monetary union, and Germany's role, are likely to continue, but contradict the EC's desire to show itself an effective force in world politics. In the midst of the polemic and rhetoric, it is easy to lose sight of the EC's original aims and the extent to which they may be seen to have succeeded or failed. This text covers all aspects of the EC, including its historical development since the Second World War, its institutional framework, its main policy initiatives (agricultural, economic, regional, social, environmental and foreign) and its relations with the rest of the world. A concluding chapter assesses the prospects for its development during the 1990s.
