Nash called this 'going' art, as the wood was constantly changing. More recently Nash has worked with what he terms 'coming' art in which he coaxes groups of living trees to form 'spaces'. One example of this is the work Ash Dome, initiated in 1978 and consisting of twenty-two trees trained to grow together until they meet at the top in a dome. This book will accompany an exhibition of Nash's work at Tate St Ives. It will include essays from writer and critic, Richard Cork and Susan Daniel McElroy, Director of Tate St Ives, covering the processes, experience and philosophy behind Nash's work and their presentation in the Modernist context of St Ives

About the book >.>.> David Nash is internationally renowned, since the 1970s, for working with wood and using a machine saw to form his large, dramatic and tactile sculptures. This publication accompanies an important exhibition created for Tate St Ives that highlights the distinctive geometric theme in Nash's work. The theme of the exhibition is characterised by inorganic, non-allusive form which has been present in his sculpture from the early wooden constructions of the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition includes a dynamic range of works including large-scale sculptures - some charred - a film projection focused on Nash's Boulder project, photographs documenting this seminal land work together with a large wall drawing created for the sea-facing gallery. Richard Cork's essay Inside/Outside the art of David Nash, and Susan Daniel-McElroy's interview with the artist both consider Nash's philosophy of ideas, his knowledge of the physical properties and processes of his chosen material, the context of making his work in North Wales and for the St Ives Modernist co. About the book >.>.> In 1983, David Nash made a work of art called Sod Swap for the British Art Show: he lifted a perfect circular ring of woodland from the slope of Cae'n y Coed, North Wales and exchanged it with a similar section of London turf from the (level) grounds of the Serpentine Gallery. The Welsh immigrant turf, rich in twenty-six plant species, amazingly survived this harsh treatment. Twenty-one years later, David Nash is still mowing the migrant circle of poor urban sod (only five plant species) growing on his land in North Wales. David Nash's career now spans more than thirty-five years. His reputation is substantial and international, having shown regularly during that time in America, Japan and Germany. Nash has created a significant and varied body of work in which the relationship between man and nature is a central theme. Nash's artistic ethos has always been one of direct, dynamic and physical involvement with his chosen material - wood -and the landscape. Since 1967 (and even whilst at college in 1964) his sculpture has formed two. Nº de ref. del artículo: Batch-FM588-LN-12457
