This authoritative work documents the breadth of Milroy's career bringing together a range of her paintings from the 1980s and 90s and a body of new work. Illustrated with works from the retrospective exhibition being held at Tate Liverpool and other sources, the book is organized by subject rather than chronology and provides a visual catalogue that reveals recurrent themes and ideas. Milroy first received attention during the 1980s for her paintings of familiar and quite ordinary objects, often devoid of any specific context, which explored issues around space, repetition, pattern, rhythm, and order. Since the early 1990s, Milroy's subject matter has expanded to include landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, people and animals, revealing her continued interest in objects in relation to space.

It is therefore a great pleasure to be able to introduce what is the most significant exhibition of her paintings to date. It is always exciting to see the work of an artist develop before one's eyes, and this has certainly been the case during the realisation of this exhibition, for Milroy was asked to make a show for us at a time when her work was undergoing significant change. During the past year she has used more of a gestural form of expression to make complex works which depict thoughts, memories and narratives in shifting space. This exhibition provides an opportunity to witness the development of her work over the past two decades and to trace the ideas which have shaped her current practice. For this exhibition, the paintings are presented in groups rather than chronologically, to enable the themes within the work to resonate.
