This book explores the need for effective planning in the devolved school and considers how school managers might respond to the new challenges and responsibilities. Its focus is essentially practical and its intention is to help senior staff in schools identify appropriate processes and actions and follow these through. Section one reviews recent developments in educational management and explores the rationale underpinning the self-managing school. It identifies key management functions in this context and the need to link objective setting, planning and resource management. Section two explores the links between school objectives, planning activities and the curriculum, staff development and resource use. It includes examples of how these issues can be tackled at school level. Section three considers how a school can move toward autonomy and self-management. It draws on relevant experience of school development and practical advice on "getting started".
