Impressionism is the most exciting and significant art movement of recent times, and is regarded as having pioneered what is known as Modern Art. The public first became aware of this revolutionary new Movement through the exhibits at the now famous Salon des Refuses in Paris, where a group of young artists mounted an independently organised exhibition of paintings in 1874, in a deliberate attempt to find another outlet for their work besides the official Salon. Impressionism became synonymous with a joyful use of clear colour « to suggest form, space and luminosity.
