The increasing speed and expanded storage capacity of moder high-performance computers, together with new advanced numerical methods and programming techniques, have greatly improved the ability to solve complex engineering problems. In order to tackle these problems it is necessary to resort to high-performance computing. This usually involves the numerical solution of a system of partial differential equations, with large numbers of degrees of freedom. As the power of computers grows, the problems which can be solved become more elaborate. The application of high-performance computing for numerically intensive problems brings several new issues that do not appear in standard computing. New algorithms and codes are required in order to effectively exploit the use of these novel computer architectures. These conference proceedings discuss the application of high performance computing for numerical intensive problems.
