Combining his position as an MP with his passion for the steam railway, Robert Adley investigates the events - political, social and commercial - that led to the end of steam on British Rail, and draws parallels and contrasts with events abroad. The 1955 Modernisation Plan and controversial Beeching Report are the backdrop to a picture of the widespread scrapping of thousands of steam locos - some only a few years old - in favour of an over-hasty dieselization programme. The book is illustrated with a further selection of the author's unpublished colour material spanning the last 30 years.
