In May 1969 six young men by the names of John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin and Eric Idle were commissioned by the BBC to produce thirteen episodes of their proposed comedy show, Monty Python's Flying Circus. Over the next five years, 45 episodes were broadcast, and Monty Python became a benchmark of TV comedy They also made four feature films, a number of records and did many live shows, including an historic appearance at the Hollywood Bowl to a capacity crowd.
