This book is part of the "Life Cycles" series, a collection of books intended as first natural history books for children. Each book takes a familiar plant or animal and traces its life cycle from conception to adulthood, explaining and illustrating each stage of its development. The series is designed with two levels of text: large type captioning the artwork for younger readers and more detailed text for older children. There are suggestions for simple methods of keeping or investigating the animal or plant. Based around the colour artwork, this book looks at the life cycle of the swallow - its nest-building habits, mating, egg-laying, the hatching of the young and their eventual flight from the nest, culminating in migration. The reader is introduced to biological terms which are explained in the glossary.
