Local history of Exeter Rowing Club.

Exeter Rowing Club was formed in 1864, though there had been a rowing club in Exeter as early as 1846. In the 1860s, Exeter was a very different place from today: about a quarter of its current size, with open sewers still flowing into the river, while the railway was still only recently completed. Yet rowing thrived, and the club soon began to be a force in the whole of the west country. Over fifteen decades, the club has had many ups and downs; successful years and quiet periods, times in the black and times in the red. The club has often had to fight hard to keep going, through two World Wars and having twice lost its boat shed and headquarters. But after 150 years, rowing is more popular than ever; the club currently has over 140 members, from teenagers up to veterans, and from international standard rowers to those who simple enjoy rowing as recreation. This book sets out to celebrate the highs and lows of the clubs history, to acknowledge the huge contribution that many people have made, and to extend awareness of rowing in Exeter to a wider audience. New members are always welcome and anyone wishing to consider learning to row should visit the website exeterrowingclub.com The front cover picture is of the Exeter Rowing Club coxed four Len Rey, which in 1987 became a casualty of the treacherous conditions on the river Plym during the Plymouth Regatta. Whilst returning victorious after winning the Senior C race, the boat was caught in the swell, split and capsized. This happened close to the boathouse, so the boat was recovered and repaired, though it was somewhat shorter than before! The crew were Karen Sampson (cox), Tim Spencer, Brian (Ted) Waycott, Dave Aplin and Richard Salmon.
Alan Peacock is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Exeter. He has been a member of ERC and a recreational rower for over two years.
