Mysterious and alluring, infinitely beautiful and breathtakingly varied, orchids have fired man's imagination throughout the ages. Found in conditions ranging from deserts to tropical rainforests, they have evolved into one of the most successful and diverse groups on the planet - though their intricate shapes and dazzling colours are now as likely to be found in their thousands in florists and on windowsills throughout the country. Exotic, yet surprisingly simple to grow and care for, orchids have won themselves an ever-increasing army of devoted specialist and amateur growers. This beautiful guide reveals the limitless fascination of orchids, reflecting the romance of their history, illuminating the triumphs of hybridization and providing the key to growing these exciting plants at home.Every one of the over 150 different orchids featured has been specially photographed to best capture their wondrous individuality. Divided according to their easiness to grow, each striking photograph is accompanied by detailed text on the plant's characteristics and individual needs. Finally, a section on cultivation provides all the practical, step-by-step advice needed to ensure rewarding results for both the interested beginner and the orchid enthusiast alike.

Brian and Wilma Rittershausen are among the most respected names in the world of orchids. They are the second generation of orchid growers to run the award-winning Burnham Nurseries in Devonshire, England, started by their father in 1950. They are both authorities within their profession: Brian was a member of the Royal horticultural Society Orchid Committee and is well known for his lecture tours in the U.S.A and Britain, while Wilma is equally well known for her writings in various orchid journals, was the editor of The Orchid Review in Britain for 15 years and has also been a member of the Royal Horticultural Society Orchid Committee. Brian and Wilma have written and contributed to several books on orchids and in 2010 the pair were awarded the prestigious RHS Westonbirt Medal for outstanding literary services to orchids. The Royal Horticultural Society is the UK's leading gardening charity dedicated to advancing horticulture and promoting good gardening. Its charitable work includes providing expert advice and information, training the next generation of gardeners, creating hands-on opportunities for children to grow plants and conducting research into plants, pests and environmental issues affecting gardeners. Royalties from the sale of this book go towards the charitable work of the RHS, promoting horticulture and helping gardeners.
