The authors address the topic of European unity and/or fragmentation from the vantage point of cultural and symbolic tension. Thus it examines the figurations of the symbolic politics employed by proponents of integration, and the political symbolics of nation-states and national identities. Where the former more often than not is a question of propagating discourses of cultural and historical unity trying to embed them in popular ways of reading the world, the latter is still charged with more affective and immediate significance for most Europeans.
