Mathematics for Biosciences is an ideal resource for those students needing a complete course of Mathematics, from basic algebra to advanced calculus and their applications. More than just a compendium of the necessary mathematical tools, the material is developed beyond the level needed to merely 'get by'. It utilises a tried-and-tested pedagogical philosophy that has been carefully developed over 25 years of 'on the job' experience in successfully teaching mathematics to nearly 3,000 undergraduate students reading Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at the University of Oxford (UK).This textbook is aimed at first-year undergraduates studying different Bioscience disciplines, including Biochemistry, Biology, Natural Sciences, Chemistry, Medicine, and Biomedical Sciences, and helps bridge the gap between those students who are equipped with mathematical training, and those without. It is also suitable for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in the Biosciences who want to refresh their Mathematics background, and university instructors who need a resource complete with problems for their students.

Elspeth Garman is a Professor of Molecular Biophysics Emerita at Oxford University. She started her working life aged 18 as a volunteer teacher in Eswatini, Southern Africa. Following a degree in Physics at Durham University (UK), she research for a DPhil (PhD) in Experimental Nuclear Structure Physics at Oxford. After seven years in Nuclear Physics Research and being a Physics Tutor, she changed fields to protein crystallography. She taught the 'Principles of Mathematics' first-year undergraduate course to Oxford University Biochemistry students for over 25 years, as well as researching into improved methods for structural biology, particularly in unambiguously identifying metals in proteins using particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE), optimising crystal cryocooling and understanding radiation damage effects during X-ray diffraction experiments.
Nicola Laurieri graduated in Biochemical and Biotechnological Engineering (BSc and MSc) at the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Lyon (France). He was then awarded a PhD degree, funded by Cancer Research UK, at St. John's College and in the Pharmacology Department at the University of Oxford (UK), where he has been an Academic Visitor since graduation. He has contributed to various research projects, publications, reviews, academic book chapters, and books in diverse Bioscience fields with different universities worldwide. He currently works as a scientific researcher and consultant in Italy at Item Oxygen, a highly innovative company developing high-technological and robotic biomedical devices in cooperation with ten Italian universities, with funding support awarded from the regional, national and European agencies.
