This book presents a guided wave-based structural health monitoring (GWSHM) system for aeronautical composite structures. Particular attention is paid to the development of a reliable and reproducible system with the capability to detect and localise barely visible impact damage (BVID) in carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) structures. TThe authors introduce a novel sensor installation method that offers ease of application and replacement as well as excellent durability. Electromechanical Impedance (EMI) is also explored to assess the durability of the sensor installation methods in simulated aircraft operational conditions including thermal cycles, fatigue loading, and hot–wet conditions. Damage characterisation using GWSHM is described and used to investigate damage in different CFRP structures. Key issues in guided wave-based damage identification are addressed, including wave mode and frequency selection, the influence of dynamic load, the validity of simulated damage, and the sensitivity of guided waves to impact damage in different CFRP materials. The influence of temperature on guided wave propagation in anisotropic CFRP structures is described, and a novel baseline reconstruction approach for temperature compensation is presented. Finally, a multi-level hierarchical approach for the quantification of an ultrasonic GWSHM system is put forth.

Nan Yue is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Aerospace Structures and Materials of Delft University of Technology since 2022. Nan obtained her PhD in 2020 on structural health monitoring in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London. She dedicates her research to bridging the knowledge and information gaps in design, manufacturing, in-service degradation and life management of lightweight high-performance structures, using continuous health information gathered by integrated health monitoring systems.
Zahra Sharif Khodaei is a Professor in Aerospace structural durability and health monitoring at the Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College London. She is the co-founder of the Structural Integrity and Health Monitoring (SI&HM) group in the department. Her main expertise is in the field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), both numerical and experimental research in passive (impact detection & classification) and active sensing (damage detection & characterization) of smart structures. She has developed different SHM systems using piezoelectric, fibre optic and novel printed sensors. She has developed SHM technologies and methodologies for diagnosis & prognosis of composite structures under environmental and operational conditions, within several collaborative projects involving UK industries and academia, EU projects (SHERLOC CleanSky II, €10M), and more recently ESA for space application. She is a member of the steering committee of CleanSky II and a Fellow of Royal Aeronautical society and Women's Engineering Society.
M H Ferri Aliabadi is a Professor of Aerostructures at Imperial College London. He has worked in the field of Solids and Structures and has established an international reputation for his achievements in the development of Computational Methods related to Fracture & Damage Mechanics. Prof. Aliabadi has pioneered a new generation of boundary element methods and is noted for his contributions to other fields. During the last decade, he has pursued research and development in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for composite airframe in collaboration with the aeronautics industry (Airbus, Leonardo) supported by significant EU funding. He has been PI and coordinator of several CleanSky EU projects including SMASH and SCOPE and coordinated the SHM platform for the wing in SARISTU project. The latest project is CleanSky II, a core-partnership with SHERLOC in which he is the PI and coordinator seeking to develop the next generation of smart (highly sensorised) composite airframes. Prof. Aliabadi has published 500 papers in leading international journals and 65 books related to Experimental and Computational Methods in Solids and Structures.
