In the book I give what I believe to be the most complete derivation of the photorefractive effect. I also shown the results of an extensive amount of experimental testing with BaTiO3 crystals. Finally, I show how these photorefractive crystals can be used for digital data storage using their ferroelectric switching properties to store data and the photorefractive effect to read the information. To understand the material you need a solid background in physics, optics, differential equations, and calculus. This is a great introduction to the Photorefractive effect for college students working on technical degrees and can be used as a supplemental text book.
