All Information Technology (IT) systems should be replaced near the end of their lifecycle while they are still functioning and while spare parts, vendor support and repair staff are readily available. However, without data that predicts a system’s Remaining Service Life (RSL), it is understandably difficult to convince management that a functioning IT system needs to be replaced. In these situations, the wakeup call is when (1) spare parts are no longer available from conventional sources, (2) the Operating System (OS) is no longer supported leaving the system vulnerable to hackers, (3) or key support personnel have left. This book explains the simplicity of using Probability Density Functions (PDF) to analyze the performance characteristics of repairable systems. The system’s PDF is important because it identifies failure rate, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), reliability, and relative probabilities. And since the pattern remains fixed until such time that significant changes are made to alter a system’s reliability, the PDF can be thought of as representing the system’s DNA.
