«Berlino è troppo grande per Berlino» è il curioso titolo di un libro del flàneur Hanns Zischler che scherza sulla bassa densità abitativa di questa città policentrica così estesa: una delle ragioni per cui la sensazione che suscita è quella di libertà e «spazio». Ma «Berlino è troppo grande per Berlino» anche in senso più ampio: come convivere e tenere viva la fiamma di un mito così ingombrante come «Berlino, città di tendenza»? Per capirlo è necessario un viaggio alle sue origini, gli anni Novanta, quando il tempo sembrava essersi fermato: cicatrici della guerra ovunque, stufe a carbone, palazzi fatiscenti, minimarket spartani, mai una casa che avesse l'ascensore e un citofono funzionante. Visitarla era un'esperienza allucinogena, un viaggio nel passato e nel futuro allo stesso tempo, quando una gioventù curiosa sembrava aver fatto proprio - ribaltandolo in positivo - il famoso aforisma di inizio Novecento di Karl Scheffler: «Berlino è condannata per sempre a diventare e mai a essere.» La ricerca della rovina abbandonata, la caccia al cimelio del mercatino, le feste illegali negli scantinati oggi non ci sono più. Quell'epoca di archeologia urbana è finita per sempre: quasi tutti i palazzi sono stati ristrutturati, le case occupate sgomberate e i negozi con il tipico arredamento Ddr hanno chiuso. Senza più ferite del passato il corpo della città è forse meno drammatico ma di certo è più forte, sano. Anche gli abitanti hanno perso qualcosa di quello struggimento, di quella vena romantica e autodistruttiva, e oggi c'è perfino chi viene a Berlino per lavorare e non solo per «creare» o semplicemente oziare. Ma Berlino rimane una città giovane, che non si attacca morbosamente a un passato «povero e sexy» e i cui unici feticci intoccabili sono una multiculturalità che non accetta compromessi e un futuro che è sempre tutto da scrivere. Anzi, per citare uno che la conosce bene, Berlino è e sempre sarà «potenziale puro».

To visit the city then was a hallucinatory experience, a simultaneous journey into the past and into the future. The city's youth seemed to have appropriated-and turned into a positive-the famous phrase pronounced by Karl Scheffler at the beginning of the 20th century: "Berlin is a place doomed to always become, never be.".
