The Silent Stoning: Rediscovering Innocence After Childhood Sexual Abuse - Tapa blanda

Sinopsis

From the outside, Jeeti Pooni’s life looked like a never-ending Bollywood movie filled with color and glamor. But behind closed doors, she lived a life of trauma as she was repeatedly raped and sexually abused by her cousin.

Jeeti and her sisters persevered through one of the longest running sexual assault court case in the history of Canada. She broke her silence when she realized her cousin, who had raped her and her sisters as children, was potentially abusing others in her extended family.

Because of Jeeti’s perseverance and resilience, her perpetrator was found guilty yet escaped any repercussions.

Jeeti’s debut book, The Silent Stoning, is a memoir written in a series of letters to Little Jeeti, her loved ones, and community. This powerful non-fiction book is an account of courage, resilience, hope, and healing. Jeeti provides a window into her life as a child, living under the control of her abuser and the female shaming that is the passed-down norm in her culture. Jeeti openly shares the story of finding her way back to herself and to living the life she dreamed of as a little girl.

The Silent Stoning is an inspiration to girls, women, and survivors. Jeeti lives and breathes tenacity and resilience. She continues to advocate for change to the Canadian criminal justice system and provides a voice for the voiceless.

Jeeti is the driving force behind the 2019 National Film Board of Canada (NFB) documentary, Because We Are Girls, which documents the impact childhood sexual abuse had on the lives of Jeeti and her family. Directed by Canadian director Baljit Sangra, the raw account of ingrained social and cultural beliefs that hinder little girls and women, is pivotal to changing patriarchal cultural attitudes.
