ABOUT THE BOOK AND AUTHOR
The Professor was the first novel written by Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855). It was rejected by many publishers but was later published, posthumously, in 1857 under her pen name Currer Bell.
The novel is written in a first person narrative and tells the story of a young man named William Crimsworth from his point of view. It covers his formative years, his appointment and career as a teacher at an all-girl's school in Brussels and his personal relationships. The Professor is based on Brontë’s own experiences in school.
Charlotte Brontë had four published novels: Jane Eyre (1847), Shirley (1849), Villette (1853) and The Professor (1857). Charlotte Brontë and two of her sisters, Anne Brontë and Emily Brontë, jointly wrote a book of poems which was originally published in 1846 under their pen names Currer, Acton and Ellis Bell.
