The need to write this book came as a result of the many years of teaching research methods, supervising and examining undergraduate and post graduate students' dissertations/projects spanning over four decades. We have observed with deep concern that many students always shy away from clearly stating, defining and formulating research problems. Many under graduate and post graduate students alike find it difficult identify viable researchable topics in geography. An attempt has been made in this book to address the challenge highlighted above in a simple manner. We are therefore grateful to many persons who have made it possible especially, the Vice Chancellor of Kaduna State University who provided funds which enabled us to participate in the field trip with the students of geography department to The Middle Niger Region from 1 st to 5th August, 2011 where the idea of writing a book from a practical and field-based experience came up. We also thank Mr. Fanen Terdoo for compiling some of the live examples of projects carried out in geography. We have however left the titles and contents of the project unedited. We hope that this book will bridge the gap we have identified, and also improve the quality of research in geography.
