Chapter 1 TYRANNOSAURUS WRECK
Humberto Lopez thought he’d spend his Sunday sleeping in, taking a walk with his abuelo, Papa Vic, and playing video games. Defending the Stark Center from Rhino was not part of his plan. But Beto was used to expecting the unexpected. Because Beto was secretly the super hero Reptil! And when the day needed saving, there was nowhere else he’d rather be.
“Get lost, Losersaurus!” Rhino cried. He charged at Reptil, who stood before the Stark Center entrance.
“I don’t think so,” Reptil replied. “I’d much rather Tyrannosaurus wreck you.”
Reptil transformed so his head and legs were those of a T. rex, and he grew a massive tail. He swung it at Rhino and swept the super villain off his feet.
“Neat trick,” Rhino groaned. “But Rhino don’t stay down for long.” He got back onto his feet and charged again. Only this time, Rhino turned away from Reptil and ran straight at the wall!
Reptil picked up a garbage can and tossed it through the air. It was about to roll into Rhino’s path when Ghost-Spider swung in.
“Sorry to horn in on your fun,” she said. “But it looks like you could use some help.” She spun a web around the barreling bin and smashed it into Rhino. He went down hard.
“Hey, I was about to trip him with that garbage can,” Reptil said.
Ghost-Spider shrugged. “I just made sure it wouldn’t miss. You’re welcome.”
Reptil’s heavy T. rex jaw dropped. Who did this hero think she was? He stomped over to Ghost-Spider, who was spinning webs into a wall. He tapped her on the shoulder, and her webbing went wide.
“What’d you do that for?” Ghost-Spider demanded. “I was going to trap Rhino in that web.”
“And I was going to take him out with the trash until you butted in,” Reptil replied. “I guess we can’t always get what we want.”
As Reptil and Ghost-Spider argued, Rhino stood up. He rolled his shoulders. He cracked his neck. He was about to charge the building again when Iron Man flew in.
“Great banter,” Iron Man said to Reptil and Ghost-Spider. “But I’d rather you stop the bad guy who’s about to destroy my building. Watch and learn, kids.”
“Aw, nuts,” Rhino said as he braced for Iron Man’s blast. But when Iron Man flew closer for a better shot, his foot got stuck in Ghost-Spider’s wayward web and he was pulled back!
Taking advantage of Iron Man’s sticky situation, Rhino ran for it. “I’ll be back,” he cried as he disappeared down the block.
Ghost-Spider and Reptil hurried to help Iron Man, but the hero had already blasted himself free. “While you two were busy not working together, Rhino got away,” he said.
“We’re sorry,” Ghost-Spider and Reptil answered in unison.
“Did you at least discover what he was after?” Iron Man asked.
The junior heroes hung their heads. “No,” Reptil admitted.
“Big guy over here kept getting in my way,” Ghost-Spider huffed.
“I was literally here first,” Reptil growled.
Iron Man sighed. “Why don’t you two go on home,” he said. “I’ll take it from here.”
As Ghost-Spider silently swung out of sight, Reptil found an abandoned alley. He returned to his human form. Though he was relieved that Iron Man was on the scene, Beto felt awful that he’d messed up. The last place he wanted to see under attack was the Stark Center. It had the best after-school programs in the city. And Beto would know because he had STEAM Club there the next day.
