Imagine a plastic cup lying on the floor. Give the cup a nudge so that it begins to roll.

Christof Weber is a professor in the School of Education at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland. He taught mathematics for twenty-five years at a "Gymnasium" in Switzerland, a post-compulsory public high school preparing students for tertiary education. He currently studies the teaching and learning of mathematics, with a particular focus on algorithms. When not working, Christof and his wife enjoy being outdoors, hiking long treks or traveling to observe eclipses.

Straight uncreased spine. -- This transformative guide revolutionizes mathematics education by harnessing the untapped power of mental imagery, turning abstract concepts into vivid, personal experiences for secondary students. Christof Weber introduces the "Mathematical Imagining" routine, a pedagogical innovation cultivated over 25 years of teaching and doctoral research. By inviting students to envision and manipulate mathematical scenarios - such as a rolling plastic cup's trajectory - Weber empowers learners to construct, debate, and refine their inner visualizations, fostering deeper comprehension and creativity. The book meticulously balances theory and practice. Part 1 delineates the routine's philosophical underpinnings, facilitation strategies, and criteria for crafting bespoke exercises. Part 2 offers 37 categorized tasks (constructions, problem-solving, reasoning, paradoxes) spanning school mathematics, complete with pedagogical commentary, anticipated student responses, and extension questions. Weber's approach illuminates students' thought processes, democratizes mathematical engagement (especially for "lower-achieving" students), and redefines the teacher's role from instructor to curator of imaginative insights. By internalizing mathematics as a mental adventure, learners transcend mere procedural fluency, developing articulate expression of their imaginal worlds. This handbook isn't merely instructional; it's a manifesto for reimagining math education, urging educators to unlock the imaginative potential dormant in every student. -- Contents: Foreword; Preface to the English Edition; An Invitation into My Classroom; Introduction; Part 1 The Mathematical Imagining Routine: Background and Guidelines 1 What Is the Mathematical Imagining Routine? 2 Implementing the Mathematical Imagining Routine 3 Developing Your Own Exercises in Mathematical Imagining; Part 2 Exercises in Mathematical Imagining: A Collection of Example Tasks 4 About Using the Example Tasks 5 Construction Exercises in Mathematical Imagining 6 Problem-Solving Exercises in Mathematical Imagining 7 Reasoning Exercises in Mathematical Imagining 8 Paradox Exercises in Mathematical Imagining; References; Index.
