She has been a clinician for more than 25 years providing services to adults, especially those with neurological disorders, in a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. She has also worked as a low vision therapist in a hospital outpatient setting and a low vision clinic where she partnered with optometrists. Her current clinical work focuses on home- and community-based care. Dr. Kaminsky taught full time in the School of Occupational Therapy at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, from 2005 until 2021 and continues to teach in an adjunct capacity. The courses she has taught have primarily focused on neuroscience and the treatment of adults with neurological disorders. Her research has focused on people with visual and/or cognitive deficits. She is especially interested in examining the use of everyday technology for adults with cognitive deficits after acquired brain injury.

Her research has also included studies of the assessment of saccadic eye movements in adults. Dr. Powell has authored numerous journal articles, chapters in occupational therapy and optometry textbooks, and consumer resources. She has copresented nationally with an optometrist/physiatrist team on assessing and treating visual impairments in adults with acquired brain injury. Before becoming a full-time faculty member in 2001, she provided occupational therapy services to children and adults with neurological disorders in a variety of clinical settings for more than 20 years.
