It’s one of life’s first rites of passage: somewhere around the age of 26 months, toddlers are introduced to the potty. Some take to it right away; some need a little more time or encouragement. Some, however, seem to have no interest in training at all or, indeed, seem bound and determined to resist it. And no matter how often a neighbor or relative tells you “No one ever packs diapers when they go way to college,” you’re beginning to think your child might be destined to enter the Guinness Book of Records for longest continuous use of Pampers and Pull-Ups.
In The Pocket Idiot’s Guide™ to Potty Training Problems, Alison D. Schonwald, also known as “The Poop Doctor” of Boston’s Children’s Hospital, addresses the needs of parents and their reluctant toddlers in a warm, reassuring manner that will calm nerves and ease tension all around.
v Find out where the reluctance comes from―or is it simply your child’s way of taking charge?
v Take stock: is the problem your child’s or the result of your hectic schedule?
v Inspire your child by making your bathroom kid-friendly.
v Locate the problem: multiple caregivers, several approaches and expectations―confused toddler?
v Design a step-by-step plan to training.
v Determine when―or if―it’s time to take a potty training break.
v Use praise but not punishment.
v Implement incentives that work.
