This book introduces readers to how music is made today using the home PC or Macintosh computer. Readers will learn, generally, what computer processing hardware is needed, but this book focuses primarily on showing readers how music is made on the PC. Readers will learn about the connections needed to get audio (instruments, vocals, etc.) into their computers and record it. They will be introduced to much of the software that is used in creating and recording music. They will learn about MIDI intstruments and controllers (devices for making and controlling sound in the computer). They will learn how effects are applied, how music is mixed, and how songs are mastered in the computer. They will learn about ancillary gear-including hardware mixers, amplifiers, and speakers-that will help make their home music-making experience complete.

Mark Nelson has been a recording and performing musician since before he could drive. A masterful player of the acoustic guitar, Appalachain dulcimer and other folk instruments, he has appeared everywhere from Kansas to Kaunakakai and from Sligo to San Diego. He's been involved writing about music technology and recording since the early days of MIDI and digital audio as a freelance writer for such magazines as Electronic Musician, Music and Computers, Revolution, and MIDI Guitar. In addition he's authored numerous instructional books for Mel Bay Publications. Mark's producing and engineering credits include award-winning CDs for Hawaiian musician Keola Beamer, early music stand-outs the Terra Nova Consort, western singe Lorraine Rawls, and many others. He lives with his wife and various furry and funny friends in Southern Oregon's Applegate Valley.
