This book is a collection of essays on diverse subjects and cover issues that concern the author as a human being trained as a scientist. They range from history, a novel by Henry James, science, the celebrations of some of the author's best friends' lives, and issues that concern the future of our planet, such as global warming and nuclear weapons.

Gregory Loew was born in Vienna, Austria, raised in Paris, France and Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he attended elementary and high school. His undergratuate education was at the Sorbonne in Paris. He then came to the US and received an M.S. in Electrical Engieering from Caltech and a Ph.D from Stanford University. He had a career of fifty years at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory retiring as co-director. In 1969 he married Gilda Thaw Harris who already had three children, and they had two more together. In 1971 he began to teach a seninar at Stanford University on the Causes of War. The National Accelerator Laboratory was involved in many international collaborations which enabled him to travel all over the world. He is the co-author and co-editor of The Stanford Two-Mile Accelerator; and author of The Human Condition, Reality, Science and History and Memories From Paris to Stanford: Life Particles and Politics.
