The year is 1905 and Lord Francis Powerscourt is sent to Ireland to investigate a series of art thefts from stately homes. But were these robberies merely for financial gain? Bizarrely, a number of Old Masters have been left untouched, while those stolen were mostly ancient family portraits of the aristocratic Protestant gentry. Could the thefts have something to do with Ireland's troubled politics?
Astonishingly, some of the portraits are returned - but very strangely altered. Then real people begin to vanish, and not long afterwards the first body is discovered at the top of Croagh Patrick, Ireland's Holy Mountain, on the very day 10,000 people make the great pilgrimage to the summit. Will more deaths follow? As Powerscourt pursues his dangerous course towards the killer, it transpires that his own patriotism and devotion to Ireland will be called into grave question.
