Sinopsis
The first edition of Edward M. White's Teaching and Assessing Writing was called "required reading for the profession" when it was published in 1985. Now, in this thoroughly revised and completely reorganized second edition, White offers the latest theoretical and practical materials that instructors in English and across the disciplines will need in order to help students build strong writing skills. White draws especially on new knowledge about assessment to offer effective methods of evaluation and feedback. In addition to outlining recent advances in teaching and assessing writing, White explains how teachers can design better writing assignments, help students write more effectively, and respond more constructively to student writing. And he covers new material, such as guidance on portfolio assessment; theories of reading and how they affect teachers' response to writing; program evaluation; and the development of writing assignments as a central aspect of teaching.

Edward M. White is professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino.
EDWARD M. WHITE is professor of English at California State University, San Bernadino. In 1993, he was elected to a second term on the Executive Committee of the Conference on College Composition and Communication. White is also the author of Developing Successful College Writing Programs (1989) and Assigning, Responding, and Evaluating (1992), and coeditor of Inquiry (1993).
