Canadian poet, Emily was the daughter of an Indian chief and an Englishwoman. She worked as contributor to periodicals and she recited her own verse under her Indian name of Tekahionwake. Her works express a keen sympathy and understanding of Indian life. Among her famous works are: White Wampum (1895), Canadian Born (1903), and Flint and Feathers (1913), Legends of Vancouver (1911). She gained recognition among current first nations authors who claimed her as an important foremother.
Originally published in 1911, this Canadian classic takes us back in time when Squamish people inhabited British Columbia . Johnson has brilliantly captured the true essence of the legends these people believed in. The stories behind these legends throw light on various natural phenomena in and around Vancouver. Johnson's vivid and colourful descriptions provide pure reading pleasure.
