This psychological drama, set in Victorian London, recounts the story of Henry, a successful and respectable doctor who has learnt over the course of his life to tame his wilder nature. When he meets Evangeline, the free-spirited daughter of unconventional parents, he knows he has finally met a woman who can be both his companion and his lover. Evangeline is initially unimpressed by Henry, and resistant to his charms, but after several accidental meetings she realises that Henry possesses a sharp wit and sensitivity, and shares her love of literature. Yet for all his outward success - his professional reputation, his good works, his comfortable home and beautiful wife - Henry is a man tormented by inner conflict and self-doubt. After their marriage, Evangeline discovers Henry’s secrets and becomes drawn into an underworld of danger and vice.
