Do you want to learn to code but have no idea where to get started? This book was created after many years teaching middle and high-schoolers how to code and observing where they struggled to learn certain basic coding concepts. In this book, we introduce coding in easily digestible chunks so you do not feel overwhelmed or discouraged. It will guide you through writing your first program with carefully worded explanations and helpful pictures. At the same time, you will learn the fundamentals of coding, including repeat loops, variables, functions, if-statements, recursion, and lists. All programs in the book are created with Scratch, a coding language developed specifically for beginner programmers by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Scratch is free and runs in an internet browser, so you do not have to buy or install any special software on your computer.

Nicole recently received her bachelor’s in Computer Science from Michigan Technological University. As a student, she was involved with Copper Country Coders, a group of MTU students and professors who teach local middle and high school students how to code. Nicole often programs with Swift, Objective-C, Java, Scratch, and Processing. When not coding, she enjoys reading, painting, and cooking spicy foods. Leo is a Lecturer of Computer Science at Michigan Technological University. His research interests include Computer Science Education, Software Engineering, and Intelligent Learning Environments. In his career as a software developer, Leo has worked on industrial, scientific, educational, and entertainment software. He has taught graphic design, mathematics, and computers at the high school level. He is currently involved in teaching grades 6-12 students to program through Copper Country Coders and in helping older adults develop computer literacy through Online@Library. He can often be found coding in Java, Groovy, Javascript, Processing, Scratch, or Racket. When not behind a computer, he enjoys beekeeping, camping, canoeing, hiking, and exploring nature in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
