Excerpt from Message From His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor of 30th January, 1836, Transmitting a Despatch From His Majesty's Government
I now proceed to the consideration of the various topics embraced in the seventh Report of the Commit tee of Grievances, and in the Addresses of the two Houses to His Majesty. And I shall advert to them in the order in which they are pursued in the report itself.
In the following pages, if any subject should ap pear to be passed over without due regard, you will understand that I have, at least, been guilty of no intentional omission, but have, in obedience to His Majesty's commands, made it my endeavour to meet every question which the Committee and the House have thought it necessary or preper to raise.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is an historical analysis of political and social events and complaints in Upper Canada for the time period leading up to 1836. The author was commissioned by the British government to summarize and analyze a report from Upper Canada's Legislative Council that complained of many abuses and grievances in local governance. The author sympathizes with the intent of the Legislative Council's report but believes that many of the proposed solutions would cause more harm than good. Based on analysis of historical documents and the report itself, the author argues that the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada should retain most of his patronage authority, that the Assembly's demand for authority over the territorial and casual revenues of the Crown and changes in the appointment of Legislative Councillors are unrealistic, and that the independence of the judiciary must be preserved. The author concludes that the best path forward for governance in Upper Canada is one where most elements of the current governmental structure and authorities are maintained.
