Excerpt from Principles That Should Control the Interference of the States in Industries: A Paper Read Before the Constitution Club in the City of New York
I am confined this evening, by the terms of your invi tation, to a consideration of the principles that should control the relations existing between the state and industrial action. Not that I complain of the narrowness of the subject you have selected for me, for it is as broad as the problem that now lies athwart the path of social progress; but I mention the limitation prescribed for the address as a partial apology for not elaborating every criticism upon the doctrine of laissez-faire that may be suggested. For myself, I regard it as a pleasure to meet a body of scholarly men who recognize the lamentable results of the attempted realization of the rule of non-interference, and who profess to see that the continued sway of this idea is fraught with danger to all that is best in Christian society. Since, then, we start with the belief in common that the theory of indi vidualism is no longer applicable to modern relations, we may proceed at once to the positive inquiry respecting the principles that Should shape the application of the theory of state control.

Librería: Forgotten Books, London, Reino Unido
Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a compelling argument against the doctrine of laissez-faire, which advocates for minimal government interference in the economy. The author posits that this hands-off approach has led to dire consequences for society, including income inequality, corporate monopolies, and government inefficiency. The author instead proposes that the state should play a more active role in regulating industry, particularly in preventing the formation of monopolies and protecting workers from exploitation. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the negative effects of laissez-faire and offers thought-provoking insights into the proper relationship between government and industry. It challenges conventional economic wisdom and offers a fresh perspective on the role of the state in modern society.
