Most of the early development took place in the East, where we find such pioneer organizations as the Jones lea Company of Pennsylvania (grocery, James Butler of Brooklyn (grocery, the Woolworth 5 and 10 cent stores and the Douglas Shoe stores and in.more recent years the Liggett Drug stores, he United Cigar Stores, and the Baltimore and Childs restaurant chains. The chain store novement spread over other sections of the country at a later date.
