Excerpt from A System of Practical Surgery, Vol. 1: Surgery of the Head
It seems probable from numerous observations that a fall (luring preg nancy or a blow on the abdomen may pnoject the fetal head against the promontory and in this way bruise the skin. Ou the other hand, it is doubtful whether such a shock can break the cranial bones of the foetus. In the few cases of fractured skull reported as occurring before birth, the injury might well have happened during birth.
