Excerpt from Method and Theory in American Archaeology
It has been said that archaeology, while providing data and general izations in such fields as history and general. Anthropology, lacks a systematic body of concepts and premises constituting archaeological theory. According to this View, thefarchaeologist must borrow his theoretical underpinning from the field of study his work happens to serve, or do without. Whether the latter alternative be an admis sible one does not seem to be an arguable point. Acceptable field work can perhaps be done in a theoretical vacuum, but integration and interpretation without theory are inconceivable.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of American archaeology, exploring its methodologies and theoretical foundations. The author argues that American archaeology, unlike its counterparts in regions with rich historical records, stands uniquely on its own, relying heavily on anthropological theory to interpret the past. The book meticulously examines the fundamental concepts that underpin archaeological investigations, including the definition of archaeological units, their spatial and temporal dimensions, and their relationship to broader cultural developments. It navigates through the intricacies of archaeological classification, addressing the challenges of discerning cultural change and continuity across vast stretches of time and space. Central to the book's exploration is the concept of the 'phase', a crucial unit of analysis in archaeological research. The author delves into the nuances of defining and identifying phases, considering their variability across different stages of cultural evolution and their role in constructing regional archaeological sequences. By offering a comprehensive framework for understanding the methods and theories of American archaeology, this book provides invaluable insights into the intricate tapestry of past societies and their cultural legacies.
