L'édition est suivie d'un commentaire où je reprends, pour expliquer les notices de Diogène et éclaircir leurs origines, certains textes cités dans la collection des passages parallèles. Dans la composition de cette partie, je me suis inspiré du programme tracé par Schwartz (pauly - Wissowa, IX, col. 750) réunir, pour chaque point, les matériaux biographiques ou doxo graphiques et remonter à l'origine des traditions, pour suivre ensuite leurs développements et leurs variations. Ce procédé permet, mieux qu'aucun autre, d'étudier de près les méthodes de travail de Diogène et de situer, dans l'ensemble de la litte rature biographique, la tradition qu'il a adoptée ou la variante qu'il a créée.
