Sinopsis

The Cards of Life Workbook; At-Risk to At-Potential (Youth) is a supplement to the book The Cards of Life; when all Hope is Gone, Trust then Believe. The workbook allows you to process your thoughts and feelings about the cards that you have been dealt in life. It is designed to assist you in having a "NO EXCUSES" mentality; it doesn’t matter where you come from or what cards you are dealing with, you must never quit the game. In life, some of us get the "Ace of Spades" and others get the "Joker." Nevertheless, it is important to play your hand to the best of your ability. The workbook outlines goals, action plans, support system identification and strategies for lowering your brick walls of protection so that you can be helped by those around you. According to the education reform, the term “at risk” is often used to describe students or groups of students who are considered to have a higher probability of failing academically or dropping out of school. The term may be applied to students who face circumstances that could jeopardize their ability to complete school, such as homelessness, incarceration, teenage pregnancy, serious health issues, domestic violence, transiency, learning disabilities, low test scores, disciplinary problems, grade retention or other learning-related factors that could adversely affect the educational performance of some students. When a student is labeled as at risk, it suggests that they will require temporary or ongoing intervention in order to succeed academically and that they are less likely to transition successfully into adulthood and achieve economic self-sufficiency. Studies also suggest that the characteristics of at-risk students include emotional or behavioral problems, truancy, low academic performance, showing a lack of interest for academics and expressing a disconnection from the school environment. Dr. Pooler challenges the at-risk label and insists that we view those students as "at potential." She believes that they can achieve the opposite of what is expected if presented with the right tools, impact and support.
