Minority pastors experience unique leadership challenges in majority culture congregations. Even though Jesus destroyed the dividing wall of ethnic and racial hostility and created a whole new humanity of equal privilege and dignity, the pervasive nature of racialized patterns in the American evangelical church undermines the influence and impact of minorities in leadership. But there is hope for true gospel transformation. In this qualitative research, I interviewed six minority pastors serving in predominantly white congregations in the PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) to explore how they overcome leadership challenges unique to their particular callings and contexts. What unique challenges do minority pastors encounter in majority culture congregations? How do majority culture pastors and congregants impact the leadership of minority pastors? Why do some minority pastors thrive in majority culture congregations while others merely survive? How does the organizational culture of the church support or subvert a minority pastor’s leadership? What are the leadership competencies and essentials necessary for minority pastors to thrive in a majority culture congregation? In view of complex historical and cultural realities, my research seeks to answer these pertinent questions as I share stories and examples of six brave minority pastors. For some, their stories wouldn’t be complete without the courageous gospel-shaped leadership of their fellow white pastors. Increasingly, both majority culture congregations and minority pastors are seeking to labor together for the sake of the gospel in our racially divided communities. Sadly, the Christian church lacks credibility in the matters of meaningful racial reconciliation. My hope is that all pastors, regardless of color, will begin to gain biblical, historical, cultural, and practical insights from these pages for their own callings and make a lasting gospel difference.
