Jangamam is an old Sanskrit word. Its literal meaning is ‘that walks’ or ‘those that walk’. The word ‘Jangamam’ first appears in the Aitareya Upanishad which is one of the major Upanishads. Description of Paramahamsa in the Paramahamsa-Upanishad is also the description of the Veerashaiva Jangama, except that the Veerashaiva Jangama is not a recluse. The Veerashaiva/Lingayata concept of Jangama is that of the so called ‘Walking Divinity’. The Walking Divinity is the one who has realized the oneness with the Absolute while still alive in this very life. Attainment of the Jangama Status, and the description of Jangama are given in this book.
