Sinopsis

Finding an answer for the “right” question is more important than finding a correct answer for the wrong question. If you get a correct answer for the wrong question, discussions can move farther away from core issues. What if… public education could actually help every child discover their full potential? Instead of asking tough questions – we often hear this question: what actions are needed to raise student achievement test scores? The tone this question is repeated in similar questions seeking ways to improve, enhance or reform public education. Investments of time and money attempting to improve outcomes for public education have not provided assurance that every child will achieve his for her lifetime potential. No one can say for sure how our nation or the world might be changed -- if every child were able to achieve their full potential. Would we see higher job satisfaction, higher productivity, lower crime rates and less need for public assistance? What are the most important factors to ensure public education can help each child achieve his or her full potential? This book presents information to help you answer these questions. Learning by doing was a critical skill which I used to succeed during a technical career – despite my lack of college training as an engineer to have qualified me for an entry level position. During my engineering career, I worked with hundreds of engineers and supervised more than fifty engineers with college degrees, several with a Masters Degree. There were moments that I feared human resources or my boss would use my limited education as justification for a transfer or demotion. I relied on my persistence and passion for learning to demonstrate that I could do the work. These ‘soft-skills’ are still in demand today, but global competition has resulted in a rapid increase of skilled workers around the world with advanced technical degrees who are also have a passion to work long hours with persistence to compete for US jobs. The USA has always moved forward using new technologies to improve quality of life; these new technologies often disrupt existing business models and change our society and our traditions. What if -- commercial and military aviation industries had chosen to improve their business model to improve their business model using fixed-wing propeller driven aircraft? What if – the computer industry had chosen to invest in a business model using vacuum tube technology? What if – NASA had chosen to use jet-engine instead of rocket technology for the Apollo project? We must also ask: what if – the education model were changed to unveil the full potential for every child? Could a more fully educated society find ways to apply technology to maximize benefits and minimize disruptions for those directly impacted by rapid changes? Our nation and educators at all levels must commit the resources to create a new TO-BE model for public education to enable every child to achieve their full potential. Proven technologies are available to design and apply proven methods to deliver learning to match the expectations and needs of all children. Our nation cannot survive with a large percentage of our citizens unqualified to serve in our military or contribute to society -- while also requiring public assistance for food, shelter and health care. We expect our children to show passion and persistence to complete their formal education (I cannot use myself as a role model) but I can be a voice to encourage children to learn-how-learn – and gain a passion to become a life-long learners.
