A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful is a 1757 treatise on aesthetics written by Edmund Burke. In short, the Beautiful, according to Burke, is what is well-formed and aesthetically pleasing, whereas the Sublime is what has the power to compel and destroy us. The preference for the Sublime over the Beautiful was to mark the transition from the Neoclassical to the Romantic era.

Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was an Irish-born statesman, philosopher, political thinker, orator, and writer who became one of the major figures of eighteenth-century British intellectual and parliamentary life. Born in Dublin and educated at Trinity College, Burke moved to London and established himself as a writer before entering Parliament, where he became known for his speeches and writings on empire, revolution, political prudence, party government, and constitutional order. His major works include A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, Reflections on the Revolution in France, Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents, and writings on America, India, and political representation.Burke's influence extends across aesthetics, political philosophy, literary criticism, conservative thought, and the history of rhetoric. In A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, written early in his career, he approached art and nature through sensation, passion, fear, pleasure, and the body's response to experience. That psychological emphasis helped make the book one of the most important eighteenth-century works on the sublime and beautiful, influencing later discussions of Romanticism, Gothic literature, landscape, terror, imagination, and the philosophy of art.

Buch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful is Edmund Burke's classic eighteenth-century study of taste, beauty, terror, imagination, and aesthetic experience. Burke separates the beautiful from the sublime, arguing that beauty is associated with qualities such as smoothness, delicacy, harmony, and pleasure, while the sublime arises from vastness, obscurity, danger, power, terror, and the mind's response to overwhelming force. The result is one of the foundational texts in modern aesthetics and a major influence on later Romantic thought.First published in 1756, with a substantially expanded second edition in 1757, Burke's Enquiry helped shift aesthetic theory away from purely classical rules and toward the psychological and emotional effects of art, nature, language, and perception. Project Gutenberg's text notes that the first edition appeared in 1756 and that the second edition, with large additions, appeared in 1757. For readers of philosophy, art theory, literary criticism, Romanticism, Gothic literature, eighteenth-century thought, and the history of ideas, this is a central work: short, forceful, provocative, and still useful for understanding why beauty pleases while the sublime overwhelms.
