I was only four years old when I was whisked away from my Bobchia (my Christian, Croatian/Polish/Italian grandmother) and her Inn in Pennsylvania. After twelve long years and unfortunate circumstances, my prayers to return to her were finally answered. Tonight I am back where I belong! My mischievous brothers are asleep in the backseat of the car as Mother drives us onto the cobblestone driveway. At last I am able to read the sign beside the pines: ‘1849 Red Barn Inn.’ My heart pounds with excitement! I step out of the car and walk across the little bridge of the babbling brook while looking skyward to the gold cross atop the green glowing cupola. I follow the sidewalk to the kitchen porch that is lined with rocking chairs and framed with lattice stretching to the Inn’s stone foundation—my favorite hiding place from Bobchia. I couldn’t possibly fathom Bobchia’s deep faith or her love for me, for in all the nooks and crannies of the Inn, along the pathways she walks in a day’s time tucked here, tucked there, are an assortment of tables adorned with starched daisy doilies under pictures of me, her Sweetie Pie. As I turn the copper doorknob, I hear your footsteps race across the bridge. I’m so excited that you are here! I can guarantee that you’ll never have a dull moment as we munch on a tin of chocolate chip cookies (with twice the chips) in the classroom of Bobchia’s kitchen as she tells us the history of the Inn as a ‘safe house’ for the Underground Railroad and of her courageous ancestors. The Inn will be crowded, no doubt, for Grandmother can turn neither beast nor being away, assuming she’s entertaining ‘angels unaware.’ You’ll see, we’ll fit in with the rest of the strays that she has collected over the years, as she makes room for me, for you, for everybody, because there is always Room in the Inn!
