Induction goes social! This guide provides training materials to run a one-day workshop on a social and participative approach to student induction. Aimed primarily at staff and educational developers, this guide offers a practical whole-group approach to implementing educational change. Through this workshop, participants are supported to explore and discuss their own induction practice. As they do so, the workshop also models the ‘student-generated induction’ process already implemented in several different institutions. Workshop participants are introduced to a new theory of learning applied to induction and transition (Social Identity Theory). To support transfer into practice, those involved will also gain first-hand experience of a new scalable and flexible practice called SharedThinking. This technology-enabled process creates a social and participative approach to student-induction in the classroom or lecture theatre. The guide also includes material on how to measure student-generated induction. These measurements are also a pedagogical tool to help the workshop provider curate the social identity of the group. This is accompanied by an introduction to innovative learning design for student-induction. The material considers induction-design from an individual, structural and social identity perspective.
