Design in Theory and Practice (Classic Reprint) - Tapa blanda

Sinopsis

The book argues that great design comes from shared principles across arts, not from one isolated rule. If you design any object, this edition helps you see how lines, forms, and tones carry meaning. It shows that beauty grows from clear intent, thoughtful proportions, and a disciplined practice, not from clever tricks or cheap materials. The ideas apply to furniture, interiors, and decorative arts, linking practical craft with aesthetic ideas.

Read to understand how designers connect creativity with structure, how environment shapes motifs, and how steady practice shapes judgment. The text emphasizes evaluating every element, seeking harmony, and avoiding superficial “clever” tricks. It offers guidance on developing a strong, clear design voice through study, observation, and deliberate refinement.

  • How common design questions recur across arts and crafts

  • How to judge line, form, and tone for coherence and beauty

  • Strategies for refining proportions and organizing space

  • Ways to cultivate a disciplined design process and environment-aware motifs

Ideal for readers of design, architecture, and craft who want grounded, practice-based principles.

Excerpt from Design in Theory and Practice

Our problems lead from the simple, constructive use of lines and forms under clearly defined limitations to work involving considerable invention, fine feeling, and freedom of execution. They begin with the geometric and work toward Nature; with the abstract, coming gradually into closer relation with the con structive questions discussed in the different chapters of the book.

Reseña del editor

Though the book is written primarily for workers, I have endeavored to tell the story in such way that it may be of interest to the general reader. A judgment is of little value unless it can be backed with a logical reason. If we would judge wisely and discriminate well, it must be from a more stable basis than personal whim or fancy. To fully appreciate a piece of constructive work, it is necessary to put ones self as nearly as is possible in the place of the worker, study the environment in which he worked, the conditions that confronted him in a solution of his problem, the technical limitations and possibilities through which his idea took definite form and from which his design derives character and style.
