A classic collection of Goethe’s drama, brought to life through thoughtful translation and notes.
This edition gathers Goethe’s major stage works—Faust, Iphigenia in Tauris, Torquato Tasso, and Egmont—along with translator’s notes and introductions that illuminate their creation and meaning. Readers gain access to the dramatic world Goethe shaped, now made accessible through careful English rendering and scholarly context.

Excerpt from Dramatic Works of Goethe: Comprising Faust, Iphigenia in Tauris, Torquato Tasso, Egmont
N the numerous versions of Faust which are already before the public,* and the ability with which fragments of this great poem have been rendered into English verse, it is, I believe, admitted, that no translator has yet succeeded in embody ing its entire Spirit in a metrical form. How far I have been successful in accomplishing this difficult task, I must leave others to determine; I can only say that, impelled by admiration of the Splendid poetry scattered through its pages, I have laboured diligently to render my translation a faithful reflection of the original, and if I have sometimes failed, it must not be attributed to any want of earnest endeavour.
