Sinopsis

Understand how the Earth’s rotation is explained through precession and nutation. This concise, rigorous work lays out the general theory of rotation for rigid bodies and applies it to the Earth, using clear equations and step-by-step reasoning.

This edition presents the exact methods for modeling undisturbed motion, then adds the disturbing forces from the Moon and Sun to show their net effect on the axis. It connects abstract dynamics with the Earth’s observable motions, offering a careful path from basic principles to planetary-scale results.

  • Foundations of rotation: Euler’s equations, constants of motion, and the invariable plane

  • How to translate angular velocities into the planet’s orientation in space

  • Derivation and interpretation of precession and nutation terms for the Earth

  • Applied results: lunar and solar contributions, and the cumulative lunar-solar precession

Ideal for readers of historical and technical astronomy, this edition provides a compact, solid introduction to the Earth’s motion of rotation and its broader implications in celestial mechanics.

PREFACE. I~ offering to the student a treatment of the Problem of the earth's rotation somewhat different from that whieh has been usually given in elementary text-books, a few words of explanation are necessal·y. The FJRST PART consists of an application of the method of the variation of clements to the general problem of rotation. That the fanTIuIal for calculating these clements are identical in the motions both of translation and rotation, appeared so remarkable, that it might be well to present the latter in a form easily accessible. .Af3 far as I a.m aware, an elementary investigation of these formulre bas not yet been given; in attempting to' supply this, I ha.ve_adopted a method somewhat similar to that which I have given for the correspouding equations of the motion of translation, in an Elementary Trreatise on the Planetary Theory. 1'he striking analogy, thus developed, between the solutions of problems, in appearance so dissimilar, may, I -hope, lead to a
