A clear, thoughtful examination of how suffering can fit with a benevolent God.
This rigorous inquiry tackles one of philosophy’s oldest questions: if God is all-good, why is there pain and evil in the world? The author argues that a view of God as actively guiding creation—working with human wills to bring about the greatest good—offers a more consoling and motivating path than a God who simply could have created all good and chose not to use it.
The discussion moves through competing ideas about power, matter, and mind. It surveys ancient and modern notions of how the world’s laws and limitations shape what is possible for the divine will, including the challenges of heredity, personhood, and the persistence of evil as a means to greater good. The book weighs the idea of a limited, but personal, God against alternatives that seem less compatible with science and reason.
Ideal for readers of philosophy of religion, ethics, and theology who seek a measured, rigorous approach to a perennial question.

To the perfectly contented believer in pure Materialism or pure Naturalism there cannot be such a thing as a problem of evil. If any one supposes that the Universe is simply a huge machine which was at one time a mere machine mindless, unconscious, purposeless but which at some late period in its history suddenly delivered itself of consciousness, a consciousness which, nevertheless, even now takes no real part in the working of the machine for him the existence of evil in the world involves no difficulty. From such a point of view it cannot be a matter of surprise that the machine should produce results which are very much contrary to the wishes, inclinations, the so-called purposes, of the little creatures who fondly imagine themselves to be taking some small part in the working of the machine.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book takes on the topic of the problem of evil, mainly from the point of view of a thoroughgoing theist. Rather than attempt to argue that there is no such thing as evil, the author instead accepts the premise that the world has a purpose and attempts to explain why that purpose necessitates the existence of evil. One way that evil is discussed is through the concept of free will, which the author presents as an integral part of God's plan despite the fact that free will has led to the existence of sin. Limitations to God's power are also explored, as the author posits that God is not omnipotent to the extent that some might assume, and instead that God's power is limited by the nature of His own creation. This book is a thoughtful and thought-provoking exploration of a complex and age-old question, providing readers with new perspectives and insights to consider.
